"Neglected Victims – the Fate of Soviet Prisoners of WW II"

This summer, 22 June 2011, marks the 70th anniversary of Germany’s assault on the former Soviet Union during World War II. With that attack, Nazi Germany opened a new chapter of warfare in which almost all international agreements were ignored. From the start, the war was ideological and racially oriented; Nazi leaders counted on millions of dead. All in all it was a campaign of destruction. An estimated 3.3 million Soviet prisoners of war (POWs) were murdered, making this one of the largest victim populations during the war. This seminar wants to dedicate itself to the stories of such POWs. The participants work on this historical subject will lead us to consider the treatment of POWs in other situations and will raise the question of human rights. The seminar will be held in a historically important building: The German-Russian Museum Berlin-Karlshorst is located at the site where, on 8 May 1945, the Germans unconditionally surrendered to the Red Army and the Second World War in Europe ended. It is not only a museum but also an official site for remembrance.
