About the organisation
The Institute for Contemporary History is located at the Czech Academy of Science in Prague. Its main purpose is to provide all practical conditions and facilities for academic research in contemporary history. Research projects are aiming at bringing together the expertise of local and foreign experts and institutions. There is also a number of educational efforts, especially in co-operation with the Faculty of Philosophy at the Charles University in Prague.

The institute is actively taking part in public and academic debates. Its aim is to support and assist to the society's search for identity by critically reflecting on the past. The staff is often participating in TV and Radio discussions as well as in the press.
The history competition
The idea to run a history competition in the Czech Republic was developed in close co-operation with the German Körber-Stiftung. In May 2000 the first round of the Czech history competition "EUSTORY" was started with the aim to encourage young people to undertake their own research on the past and develop a critical attitude towards historical evidence. Requirements
The participant should be age 15 to 18. They can undertake individual as well as group research. There is no limit to the number of pupils in one group. Usually teachers at the students' respective schools also work as tutors.
Formalia
The research paper should not be longer than 50 pages and (computer) typed. Right now the formal requirements are told to them by their teachers who are briefed by the competition organisers. However, the institute is currently working on a brochure to be handed out to the schools and pupils in next year's competition.
Jury
The jury consists of five academics and five history teachers. The research papers are distributed among the jury members, each paper is read twice - once by an academic, once by a teacher. The best 25 papers are evaluated by another two members of the jury.
Award
There are all together 20 prizes: The first, second and two third award winners receive cash prizes, the others book prizes. All tutors are invited to the Award Ceremony and all participants receive a certificate
